The small East Riding of Yorkshire village of Brandesburton is situated just 14 kilometres north-east of Beverley and, along with the hamlets of Burshill and Hempholme, form the civil parish of Brandesburton. The village once held a series of race meetings, beginning in 1856, although they were never as famous or as well attended as the nearby minster town of Beverley. Entries for the meeting on Thursday 15th May 1856 had to be made at the Cross Keys Inn and were restricted to horses within 20 miles of the village which had hunted with the Holderness Hounds. The Hunters Stakes Hurdle was won by Mr J Hopper’s Fairy who got the better of Long-Looked-For and Rejected. The main Steeplechase went to Rejected, while the concluding Scurry Stakes was won by Chance, owned by Mr Rugg and ridden by Stather. The meeting on Wednesday 26th April 1865 took place on a course on the edge of the village which ‘was a well adapted place for trying the capabilities of steeplechasers’, with natural fences comprised of 5 hedges, a ditch and a water jump, with a central hill for ease of viewing. Races continued to be held annually each April for the next 4 years until the final meeting on Wednesday 21st April 1869. |
